WEEK 8 BLOG (10/3 - 10/9)

Palestine recently submitted a bid to the United Nations to become a member state, even though they have not been officially granted statehood by Israel...

http://www.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,2094673,00.html

Israel and the United States have both come out in opposition to this happening, with the U.S. going so far as to say that they would use their veto power to stop it from happening...

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2011/09/08/obama-quote-used-by-palestinian-ad-to-push-un-statehood-vote/

Because of how all this has played out, it has brought the influence of the U.S. in today's political world into question...

http://www.abc.net.au/unleashed/3208338.html

Should Palestine be granted membership into the U.N. if they are not officially a country?  Should they be allowed to use this type of tactic to potentially force Israel to negotiate with them on the issue of statehood?  Is the U.S. making the right decision by going so far to back Israel by offering to veto the vote?  Does the U.S. still have the political power to be able to dictate what happens around the world?  (PART I due by 10/6; PART II due by 10/9)

  1. i think that Palestine and and the un should handle their own problems and that the united states should stay out of it because it shouldnt involve us. the us isn't supposed to babysit what the world does. Israle should negotiate with palestine and make an equal compropmise so that the fighting stops and everyone is happy.

  2. I believe that we need to just keep to ourselves when it comes to the middle east countries and their problems. We are just dragging ourselves down trying to help everyone else out even though we have our own problems. We are trillions of dollar's in debt and we are worrying about other countries getting access into the U.N. It is stupid of us to try to help someone else when we can barely help ourselves.

  3. When It comes to the the middle east I believe that while the US should be observant and know whats going on we should not be involving ourselves in their problems. Palestine and Israel need to solve their own problems through peace talks and other tactics rather than involving the US. We are not the police of the world and just because we are a more powerful country that does not give us the right to dictate what happens around the world.

  4. Palestine should not be granted membership into the U.N. considering they are not a nation. For this instance i believe that since israel is our strongest ally in the middle east we should acknowledge their request just like they would for us. Now that doesn't mean we need to be in everybody's business. We have the power because luckily the rest of the world fell along with us but that doesn't mean we need to do it.

  5. I believe that Palestine should not be accepted into the U.N. as of right now. I feel like they need to get all of their eggs in one basket. Yet, I do feel that they should be able to use this tactic to become an individual state. I believe that the United States should focus on their own problems as of right now, such as going bankrupt or people killing each other. Pretty much, we have enough problems of our own, why are we trying to help someone else!

  6. I believe that Palestine should not be granted the right to become a member of the UN due to the fact they are not even a legitement country. If the US was to possibly veto, I believe it would be a smart decision because Israel is one of our best allies in the Middle East, we are just helping out a friend. The problem I have with this though is that we, the US, have many problem we should deal with first.

  7. Well since the fact that Palestine is not an independent country it only makes since that they are not granted membership into the United Nations. I believe that Israel and Palestine need to negotiate in a peaceful manner and figure out their true problems. I believe that Palestine is smart for using this tactic in order to try and be part of the U.N., but I also belive that they will never be granted membership into the U.N. until Israel and them have settled their arguments in a peaceful way. The United States of America is doing the right thing for sure! We are backing up our allie, Israel, in vetoing Palestines membership. Our vetoing is a sign that we as a country can be trusted! Also, the U.S. does have the political power to dictate world wide arguments, due to the fact that we are the super power of the world. If the U.S. sits back and just observes, we will not remain the super power; therefore our involvement in the Middle East is a plus factor to our nation. Even though the U.S.A. is going through a tough economic depression, we still need to act superior and try to be superior than all of the other countries in the world in order to remain the worlds super power. In conlcusion, our involvement in the Middle East may not just be to help others out, but also to help ourselves out. Just think, where does almost all of the worlds oil come from, as well as exports and imports?

  8. I believe that Palestine should not be granted membership in the U.N., just because that they are not a county. however if this does change then i would fully support palestine becoming a member in the U.N. however this is such a trivial matter, compared to other issues in the world. there is fighting in the middle east still, our economy is still trying to keep its head above water, and we are worried about this! America does have the power to veto but really should not, if we do veto that woyuld make just one more "possible" country hate the U.S.

  9. Personally, I do not believe that Palestine should be allowed in the the U.N. This is because they are not even a country, and the U.N. is an important group of countries. In my own opinion, the US should not get involved with this because we have big enough issues of our own. It seems that we are always busy trying to be the police of the world, and we do not spend enough time trying fix our own problems. hopefully the situation is resolved peacefully, but without us being the ones involved.

  10. Alright well I'm sick of all this talk about the united states backing israel. We need to quit solving their problems for them. Palestine should not be allowed in the un because they are not officially a country however the us is doing wrong by not allowing them to become a state. Do we realize that us backing israel has caused an even greater sense of anti Americanism in the region? The us needs to back off in my opinion it is time for us to stop babying the people of israel if they want to be a power and be influential thy need to stop fighting wig the palestinians as do they and find a diplomatic solution to their obvious problems without the help of the united stares it is not fair for us to be a target simply because he Israelites won't stand up and say enough.

  11. i agree with wyatt we need to stop solving other peoples problems becaue it isn't our responsibility. Palestine shouldn't be allowed in un because they aren't even a country. it isnt our duty to help other people, we have our own problems to solve first. We shouldn't even be involved in any of this i think we should just have communications with the middle east because of oil and thats it

  12. ON RETREAT

To be honest, I believe that Palestine should be allowed to become a state. I think that it shall loosen the tension between Israel and Palestine that has existed for the past few decades. I do not see this tactic as a way for Palestine to force Israel to submit to cooperation. I believe that U.S. has made a wrong move by backing up the Israel on the ideal that Palestine should not be granted statehood. We already have enough people hating our country in the Middle East and I believe that this would cause more harm than good. I still believe that the U.S. still has the political power to handle this, but I think that it is slightly lower than it was after the 9/11 incident that showed that the U.S. was just as vulnerable as any other country in the world.

  13. Wyatt, I agree with your ideas. If we focused on creating a more organized Middle East, I believe that the issues at this current time would begin to fade away. By supporting the Palestinians, the groups that show violence to us (i.e. Al-Qaeda, Taliban, etc) would loosen their aggression on the U.S. for aiding them in their situation.

  14. Matt, I understand that because Israel is an ally that we should assist them in the scenario we currently are facing here. However, I believe that if we focused on the good of all instead of just those whom we trust the most, we can begin to form better political relations with the countries that have been disappointed with the actions that our country has already committed to preforming. Helping out the Palestinians may help douse the fire that exists in the Middle East right now.

  15. Jake, I know how you feel. The US has many of our own problems we need to deal with. However, I believe that we deal with our own problems THEN help out Israel. It is crucial that we keep ties between our allies in the Middle East. We should not just deal with our own problems then do nothing about the Middle East. We are the political power of the world, there are so many contries that depend on us to direct the problems into the right direction.

  16. Chris, I too believe that Palestine should be accepted as a state/country and that it would release some tension between Israel and Palestine. But do you believe that Palestine should be accepted to the UN? I do believe that it is just making more people hate us, but Israel is our allie.

  17. I also agree with Wyatt, we have our own problems and issues and we need to let them take care of it. Its their home not ours and we are bad off as it is ourselves. We need to improve our country and keep it at a good spot before we try to be good Samaritans and help others out.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I also agree with Tyler on the issue. The U.N. is a huge group of countries and Palestine isn't a country. Why should they get certain privileges when they aren't a country.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I agreee with Nick we need to keep our eyes open to the problems in the region but we do not need to be involved in their issues. We need to adcvise them if they want our opinions but otherwise let them handle it.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I agree with Tyler we have spent long enough fixing other places and let out own problems take the back seat. We need to focus on ourselves and let tge other people around the world figure their own problems out on their own

  21. I don't know why we are still stuck so far up Israel's butt. They are a country just like the US; they should be embarrassed of the fact that they have to hide in our shadow. If I was Israel, I would be asking the US to back off so that Israel could show a little independence. Israel has more than enough fire power to blow Palestine of the face of the Earth; so i think that if Palestine has the guts to mess with them then we should just stay out of their politics. It doesn't directly affect us enough for us to be this involved in their politics.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Wyatt, I agree that we need to start letting the people of Israel handle their own issues. Us hovering over them and protecting them is only stiffling their independece and pride as a country. If anything, the way we are sheltering them is making them a weaker nation in the long run.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Tyler, I totes agree with you. The real issue isn't over the U.S. having the power to stop Palestine from joining the UN with our veto power. It is simply the fact that Palestine needs to attain statehood before proposing membership to the UN. Contrary to popular belief, we are not the world's police. We need to butt out, and let Palestine and Israel do their thing.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I have to agree with Wyatt on this one. We both believe that the United States needs to solve their own problems before going to help another country in the middle east. The United States has problems just like everyone else. But normally, countries that have issues fix them first, then assist others.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I also agree with Tyler Morgan here. The United Nations should not allow Palestine to become a country. Palestine is not a country and will never become one in my opinion. Palestine is just a group of people coming together. They do not form a stable government and never will. Plain and simple.

  26. commenting on wyatts blog, i think that wyatt is completely wrong about the USA leavinf Israel. The US needs to reamin the super power of the world and also remain a good allie so that other countries do not see us as a renigger. In order fo rthe US to remain the worlds super power we need ot have control of worldwide decisions!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Tyler, you and wyatt must have typed this together! awwwe sooo cute! just kidding guys! But anyways, tyler you need to understand that the US is just trying to help, and that is by getting involved to help out allies; therefore for us to remain a superpower we do need ot be involved in worldwide situations. The usa may be experiencing rouptimes, just as many other ocuntries, but for the USA to look like a good, trusted allie, we need to remain involved in the Israel vs. Palestine argument.

  28. I agree with Nicole that Palestine should not be admitted into the UN and that we should let other people handle their own business to a certain extent.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I disagree with Wyatt because of the fact that we need to keep Allies with Israel. They rely on us for a lot of help and with out us there would be no Israel or Holy Land. Israel is our biggest ally in the middle east.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I do not think Palestine should be admitted to the UN simply because there are not even a nation themselves. Also, i think that the US being involved in Middle East issues is just silly. We should just let them do their own things and figure it out themselves. If the US focuses too much on other countries and not enough on ourselves, we may not get done here what we need to.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I agree with Matt on the facts that Palestine is not even a country, so they should not be let in the UN.

    ReplyDelete
  32. On the other hand, I disagree with Wyatt because the US should remain allies with Israel. We help out Israel with a lot of things, and remaining allies with them may help us in the long run.

  33. Mikey, I agree with the comment that you made on this topic. I also do not believe that they should be granted access into the UN.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Alex although I do not agree with the terms you used, I do agree with the basic points that you had to make on this topic. Basically everything you posted, I completely agree with.

  35. i pretty much sgree with everyone here, israel is an independent country just like the Us and should be solving their own problems. It is doing nothing for us except causeing conflict. I feel like the US are so focussed on their appearance of how the world views them that it causes problems. we are not here to be a superheo and fix everyone elses problems.

    ReplyDelete
  36. i also think that mikey is obsessed with bein the world's superpower. the US needs to focus on its own problems instead of being a superpower. we have so many problems of our own. we have already proven that we are a good allie and i think its time for isreal to fight their own battles now. i totally disagree with everyhting that mikey believes in

    ReplyDelete
  37. i agree with tyler, it just makes sense that the United NATIONS should not let a palestine in on the reason that they are not a county of their own.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Nicole i agree with you that we really shouldnt be involved in the Israelp/Palestine argument but it does have to do with us. we are members of the U.N. and therefore it is our resonsibility to make sure to keep others in check.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I have to disagree with Michael strongly, being a world superpower is not proving or forcing superiority over others. Sittting back and observing rather than getting involved will not effect our ability to be a world super power in fact in the past we have have used this tactic of isolationism and keeping to ourselves and it has not changed and did not change our country's status as a super power. Being a super power is not about being able to bully other countries around the world and tell them what to do simply because were stronger and having to remind them of it to recognize us as more powerful, that will only fuel the strong hatred that is already felt for the US in the middle east. Rather being a super power is about influence and respect, not from a military stand point but from an the stand point that we know how to handle ourselves as a nation. We want other nations to look at the US and say thats what we need to be doing so we can fix the problems were having here instead of them saying We better hurry and do what the US says because there will be consequences if we don't and then eventually rebelling against us. How can the US even try and begin to control another group of people on the other side of the world when we have so many problems in our own country. Is that not why we declared our independence from Great Brittan but in that case we were still apart of England, in the middle east we are trying to influence people that are not apart of our own nation and who have no desire to be apart of it. We need to worry about our own country before we worry about others.

  40. I agree with Tyler in his agreeing with Alex. While those aren't the exact terms I would put it in I believe Israel is fully capable of defending themselves they have on two occasions warred with Palestine and both times risen victorious. With Israels surrounding countries being aggressive and threatening towards them I feel they need to establish themselves as strong and able to defend themselves rather than running to the US for help every time there is a problem. Israel and Palestinians need to fix their problems with each other because they are exactly that "their problems" not the problems of the US.

    ReplyDelete
  41. This is ridiculously late but never the less... i would have tot say that if Palestine wants to have any kind of respect towards them, in the future they should handle their issues themselves. if they want to join, they should, we shouldn't feel the need to try to solve everyone else's problems in the world. i feel like there are plllllenty of other things that the United States should be worrying about in the United States, we dont need to go elsewhere looking for problems to solve. Israel should work on a way to compromise and put everyone at peace.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I agree with nicole, we should have everyone at peace and there should be a compromise. and that the united states should just keep their distances. why cant we all just get along?

    ReplyDelete
  43. i also agree with tyler, and alex, we shouldnt be so concerned with the other problems in the world when there is so much going on in the united states we could be more focused on fixing.
